Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
The vSAN Health Service shows a warning for controller driver versions containing string patterns with -1OEM or VMW even though the driver is compatible as per the vSAN HCL entry for the device.

For example, this issue occurs when using the megaraid_sas driver version 6.608.16.00-1OEM with an LSI / Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS Invader controller or Cisco 12G SAS Modular Raid Controller for vSAN or an Intel NVME controller with driver version 1.2.0.27-4vmw.550.0.0.1331820.

For more information about the vSAN Health Service - Controller Driver check, see vSAN Health Service – vSAN HCL Health – Controller Driver (2109263).

Environment

VMware vSAN 6.1.x
VMware vSAN 6.2.x
VMware vSAN 6.5.x

Cause

The health check warning for this particular driver because in the vSAN HCL database, the driver name includes the -1OEM or VMW string at the end like 6.608.16.00-1OEM or 1.2.0.27-4vmw.550.0.0.1331820, whereas the Heath service is expecting just 6.608.16.00 or 1.2.0.27-4

Resolution

This issue is resolved in vSAN 6.6, available at VMware Downloads. vSAN is a part of ESXi. When ESXi is installed, the kernel modules are also included for vSAN.

Note: Regarding the examples cited above, the megaraid_sas driver 6.608.16.00-1OEM and Intel NVME driver 1.2.0.27-4vmw.550.0.0.1331820, the drivers in the examples are fully functional, compatible and compliant. The Health Check warning is a reporting issue.

Workaround:
In the above example cases of the LSI/Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS Invader controller or Cisco 12G SAS Modular Raid Controller, if unable to upgrade, the problem can be worked around by installing driver version 6.606.06.00.
