How to handle new hardware version mismatch alarm on NSX 4.0.1

Issue/Introduction

There is a new hardware version mismatch alarm raised starting in NSX 4.0.1. This KB article will describe how users can resolve this Hardware version mismatch alarm.

Resolution

User can follow steps mentioned in the below table to resolve the Hardware version mismatch alarms:

 

Case	Does ESXi version support the Edge hardware version for which NSX has raised the alarm?	Will Redeploy API call Resolve the Alarm?	How to Resolve Alarm
1.	No	Redeploy will not update the Edge node hardware version and the alarm will not be resolved	If user is not concerned with the performance difference due to the current hardware version, user can ignore this alarm. In this case user can resolve alarm from "System" -> "Fabric" -> You will see list of "Edge Transport Nodes" -> In rightmost column you will see alarms for that edge node -> Select this alarm then from "Actions" click "Acknowledge"
2.	Yes	Redeploy will update the Edge hardware version to the max hardware version supported by ESXi	Please redeploy Edge node to resolve hardware version mismatch. NSX Redeploy API - POST https://<manager-ip>/api/v1/transport-nodes/<tn-id>?action=redeploy.

Note:

When running NSX 4.X and ESXi version 8.0.2, the Edge Hardware Version should be vmx-21. At first deployment of the Edge Appliance (when deploying from the UI), the Edge Hardware Version should show correctly. After a redeploy/upgrade of the Edge Appliance, the Hardware Version may change to vmx-20 and a Medium alarm will be generated flagging a mismatch. This is a known issue in NSX 4.X when running ESXi version 8.0.2. The issue has been fixed in NSX 4.2.0. It is recommended to upgrade to NSX 4.2.0 or newer and redeploy the Edge Appliances to get vmx-21 on ESXi 8.0.2 and newer.
