Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
Attempt to mount an NFSv4.1 share which has NFS referrals enabled, fails to mount.

The following logs will appear in /var/run/log/vmkernel.log,

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7
VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.5

Cause

The ESXi NFSv4.1 client does not support NFS referrals yet. So, any attempt to mount a share with NFS referrals enabled will fail.

Note: The NFS referrals feature is only applicable to NFSv4.1. NFSv3 protocol does not have support for NFS referrals.

Resolution

None

Workaround:
Make sure that NFS referrals are disabled before mounting an NFSv4.1 share through ESXi NFS client
