Edge fails to upgrade with error "Software download failed"

Issue/Introduction

Edges may fail to apply the latest software image with the below error in VCO events.

Environment

VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud

Cause

There are several causes to this issue.

 

1. The edge is too far away from the VCO geographically. This can increase the latency between them and the images may take even longer to download or they fail mid way. Please test the latency between the edge and the VCO by:

   edge:~# traceroute -n -T -p 443 <VCO URL/IP address>

2. If the Edge has a low bandwidth WAN link, and the download traffic might compete with user traffic. This leads to incomplete downloads. In such situations, we see that the  image size in the VCO doesn't match the size of the image when downloaded
3. File system error which causes new uploaded image can not be saved under /velocloud/images/ directory
   

 

Resolution

If the failure is related to image file transmission, we can manually upgrade the edge. Please reach out to VeloCloud support for assistance in performing the manual upgrade.
