Issue/Introduction

This article helps interpret incorrectly reported VCF upgrade bundle validation precheck errors and warnings which are not applicable to certain states of the environment prior to having all product upgrades applied.

Symptoms:

VCF prechecks results contains error of "Upgrade bundle validation" for cluster or vCenter containing the following text:

  • "Bundle validation for bundle of type HOST with upgrade version .... failed due to error Failed uploading the update/upgrade patch files to VUM,performing compliance checks on the cluster"
  • "Bundle validation for bundle of type VCENTER with upgrade version ... failed due to error ... This vCenter Server has extensions registered that cannot be upgraded to or may not work with the new vCenter Server. Extensions: NSX-T Manager"
  • "Bundle validation for bundle of type VCENTER with upgrade version ... failed due to error ... The source system cannot be upgraded, because its version 8.0 is unsupported"

The errors can be found at the following location: /var/log/vmware/vcf/operationsmanager/operationsmanager*.log

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 4.1
VMware Cloud Foundation 4.2.x
VMware Cloud Foundation 4.3.x
VMware Cloud Foundation 5.0
VMware Cloud Foundation 4.0.x
VMware Cloud Foundation 4.4.x

Cause

The error occurs due to running bundle validation for products prior to having dependent product upgrades applied.
In case when the above ESXi error is displayed, first NSX and vCenter need to be upgraded. Once this is done, the error will disappear.

The vCenter warning regarding incompatible extension: NSX-T Manager, can be ignored as the VCF upgrade plan ensures that NSX upgrade preserves vCenter-NSX interoperability.

Note: There might be additional warnings or errors reported by "upgrade bundle validation" ESXi and vCenter checks. These additional issues should be investigated following the provided remediation guidance in the precheck report or in the related vCenter UI tasks section.

Resolution

The issue has been fixed in VMware Cloud foundation 5.0.0.1 release.

Workaround:

To workaround the issue, please follow the below mentioned points:

  • Ignore the ESXi bundle validation precheck error. Proceed with NSX and vCenter upgrades. After these upgrades are completed, re-run prechecks for the selected cluster(s). If the issue still persists, it needs to be investigated in vCenter UI.
  • Ignore the vCenter bundle validation precheck warning regarding "NSX-T Manager extension". Do Not ignore reported errors for other extensions. Proceed with NSX and vCenter upgrades even if this warning is reported.
  • Ignore the vCenter bundle validation precheck error regarding "version 8.0 is unsupported" as vCenter has already been upgraded.

Note: There maybe other errors or warnings reported by the "bundle validator" precheck in downstream products when selecting all components for "Version-specific" check. Any errors related to such downstream products that depend on other product upgrades should be ignored and user should proceed with available upgrades.

Examples:

  • Prior to applying NSX upgrade, any bundle validation errors for vCenter or ESXi should be ignored.
  • Prior to applying vCenter upgrade, any bundle validation errors for ESXi should be ignored.
