Target vCetner VM left orphaned in the vCenter inventory that impacts the retry upgrade of vCenter in VCF.

Issue/Introduction

This article provides a workaround for the users to proceed with the retry of the vCenter upgrade in VCF due to the above failure.

Symptoms:
A virtual machine with the name 'vcenter-upgrade-target-appliance_<domain_id>' already exists on the target ESXi host or cluster. Choose a different name for the vCenter Server Appliance.

Environment

VMware Cloud foundation 5.x

Cause

The temporary target VM is left orphaned and not deleted when the vCenter major upgrade fails during install in VCF

Resolution

The issue is fixed in VCF 5.0.0.0 release.

Workaround:
Follow the below mentioned steps:
  1. Login to vSphere client UI
  2. Select Inventory tab
  3. Select the target appliance ('vcenter-upgrade-target-appliance_<domain_id>')
  4. Right click
  5. Delete from inventory
  6. Login to VCF SDDC UI
  7. Retry the vCenter upgrade
