Issue/Introduction

  • The virtual xhci implementation of xhci version 0.96 is default for hardware version 10.
    • The default number of ports on the root hub is 4.
    • Some guest operating systems, for example Windows 10 and OS X, cannot recognize some ports on the root hub with the root port layout in xhci version 0.96.

  • The virtual xhci implementation of xhci version 1.0 is default for hardware version 11.
    • This xhci implementation has a different port layout and the default number of ports on the root hub is 8.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use USB 2.0 controllers for virtual machines with operating system Windows 10, Windows Server 2016 or OS X, and hardware versions prior to 11.

Below are VMware vSphere 6.7, 7.0 and 8.0 references on how to use USB 2.0. Steps are the same.
