Failed to install Ubuntu 22.04.x Desktop in VM running on ESXi 7.0GA/7.0b with Skylake/IceLake CPU.

Issue/Introduction

Users will encounter failure to install 22.04.x Desktop in virtual machines running on ESXi 7.0GA / 7.0b on hardware with Skylake or IceLake CPUs.

Symptoms:

While installing Linux Ubuntu 22.04.x Desktop, after choosing location in the wizard window "Where are you", a popup with title "Installation failed" appears, showing the message

The installer encountered an unrecoverable error ……

 

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.x

Cause

This is caused by an Ubuntu installer component crashing due an xsave CPU feature, which is incorrectly exposed in ESXi 7.0 GA and 7.0b.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in ESXi 7.0 Update 1 (build 16850804) and later versions, available in the Broadcom download portal.
