Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  1. vMotion of a Virtual Machine to ESXi 7.0U3 or newer version can result in Virtual Machine crash with core dump and an error such as:

vcpu-1:VMM fault 14: src=MONITOR rip=0xfffffffffc0XXe00 regs=0xfffffffffcXXXdc0 LBR stack=0xfffffffffcXXXaXX.

  1. VM suspend and resume operation on ESXi 7.0U3 or newer version, may observe same crash and similar error message.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.3

Cause

In rare cases, when a data breakpoint is enabled in the guest OS of virtual machines, during checkpoint resume or post live migration, an internal virtualization data structure might be accessed before it is allocated. As a result, the virtual machines crash with a core dump.

Resolution

The issue has been resolved in 7.0 Update 3L.
