Issue/Introduction

To provide information regarding the removal of hosts from a stretched cluster in VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC on AWS).

Symptoms:
The "Remove Hosts" task in VMware Cloud Console is failing.
Error seen: Can't remove hosts. You have reached the minimum amount of hosts available for your cluster.
The cluster is a stretched cluster with four or six hosts.

Cause

This is caused by the minimum amount of hosts that must be in a stretched cluster in VMC on AWS.
A stretched cluster that has been deployed or scaled out to four or six hosts cannot be scaled in.
Stretched clusters that have been deployed or scaled out with more than six hosts can be scaled in to the six host minimum.

Resolution

There is no resolution as this is by design.

Additional Information

Remove hosts from the VMware Cloud on Operations Guide.
From the documentation: "Both conventional (single-AZ) and stretched clusters require at least two hosts. A stretched cluster that has been scaled out to four or six hosts cannot be scaled in. Stretched clusters with more than six hosts can be scaled both out and in."

Impact/Risks:
VMC on AWS stretched cluster environments with four or six hosts cannot be scaled in.
Environments with more than six hosts that have been scaled in can experience storage latency due to the overhead introduced by the host removal and the storage latency varies by the amount of data involved.
