Issue/Introduction

  • Virtual machine (VM) network interfaces fail to initialize connection automatically following a reboot or a restart during a vSphere High Availability (HA) failover.
  • The network adapter appears disconnected in the vSphere Client.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x
VMware vSphere ESX 9.x

Cause

The Connect at Power On checkbox is deselected under the virtual machine network adapter device status. This configuration occurs if it is left unchecked during the VM's initial creation or if it is changed manually at a later time.

When this setting is unchecked, the VM starts disconnected and does not connect to its network adapter when powered on, rebooted, or restarted during an HA failover.

Resolution

  1. Log in to the vSphere Client.

  2. Right-click the affected virtual machine and select Edit Settings.

  3. Locate and expand the Network Adapter section.

  4. Under Device Status, select the Connect at Power On checkbox

  5. Click OK to save the changes.
