Issue/Introduction

The purpose of this article is to provide supplementary instructions for properly deploying a Windows worker plan when using TKGI with the Management Console that has already deployed a TKGI environment.

Because of the nature of TKGI Management Console, the console will not deploy a Windows worker plan without a user-created Windows stemcell manually applied in OpsManager. In order to make the Windows stemcell available for the Management Console to deploy, you must create a placeholder Windows plan in OpsManager and provide a Windows stemcell that can be used by the Management Console to create a new Windows worker plan to overwrite the placeholder Windows worker plan in OpsManager.

Environment

VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid 1.x

Resolution

  1. Access OpsManager via the web UI.
  2. Click on the TKGI tile and navigate to either Plan 11, 12, or 13 and activate one of the plans.
  3. Fill out the plan to use Windows workers and available AZs. Then click Save when all the required fields are filled (This plan will not go into effect it; is only created to supply the Windows stemcell).
  4. Navigate to the Stemcell Library in the top center of the OpsManager UI screen.
  5. Click Import Stemcell and upload your preconfigured Windows stemcell. Note: Instructions on how to create a Windows stemcell are noted in Creating a Windows Stemcell for vSphere Using stembuild.
  6. After the stemcell is uploaded, specify it to be used for TKGI in the Stemcell Library.
  7. Navigate to Review Pending Changes in the OpsManager UI and apply changes without the clusters errand box checked. After apply changes completes, check to insure that the windows plan is active in the TKGI tile.
  8. In Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated Edition Management Console, expand Configuration and select TKGI Configuration.
  9. If you did not already create a plan that uses Windows worker nodes, or if you have upgraded this Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated Edition instance from a version that did not support Windows worker nodes, expand the Plans section and create or reconfigure a plan that uses Windows worker nodes.
  10. If necessary, reconfigure any other options that show a red status bar or that you want to change.
  11. Click Generate Configuration to view the generated YAML file.
  12. Click Apply Configuration to redeploy this Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated Edition instance.
  13. When the deployment finishes, go to Cluster Create and ensure that the Windows worker plan is available to deploy. After this OpsManager will have updated plans and the Windows worker plan will be configured with the Management Console settings in the first available plan starting at plan 11 to 13.
