Issue/Introduction

Bulk migration with Retain MAC policy fails with the following error

One or more VMs have errors, cannot proceed with migration.
You may retry validation after fixing the issues.
The mac address of the VM belongs to the reserved mac range, retain mac is not supported for such vms

Environment

VMware HCX Bulk Migration

Cause

This error is shown when the source VM is using a VMware reserved MAC address

Resolution

1) To prevent this issue, please re-generate a new MAC address which is not included in the VMware reserved MAC address range.

  • Go to vSphere Client > Inventory > VM > Edit Settings... > Network adapter > MAC Address
  • Change MAC address manually with Manual or automatically with Automatic.

Please note: The mac address of the VM belongs to the reserved mac range, retain mac is not supported for such vms

2) Instead of modifying the source MAC address, We can configure HCX to not retain the MAC address during migration. This will result in a new MAC address being assigned to the VM at the target site after bulk migration.
