After patching the vCenter Server Appliance from 7.x to any other version while using Update Manager Download Service (UMDS) as the patch repository for the hosts in the infrastructure, the below error is found:
A general system error occurred: Download patch definitions task failed while syncing depots. Error: integrity.fault.IncompatibleUMDSFault
VMware vCenter Server 7.0.x
UMDS cannot be upgraded on a Linux-based operating system. It must be uninstalled followed by a fresh install of UMDS as required by the install / upgrade documents. Once the fresh install is completed, the existing patch store from the previous UMDS installation can be reused.
The UMDS installation should match the vCenter Server version and build number. Once the vCenter Server has been patched, you will encounter the "UMDS incompatibility" error while syncing the updates if the UMDS service has not been updated / reinstalled at the updated version that matches with the vCenter Server.
To use the latest UMDS version on a Linux-based system, the current version of UMDS needs to be uninstalled. There is no direct upgrade path available to a later version of UMDS.
