Issue/Introduction

  • Migrating virtual machine to different datastore on the same host fails when CD ISO file is attached with error:

    "Currently connected device" 'CD/DVD drive 1' uses backing '[datastore] SP1.ISO', which is not accessible
     
  • Performing storage vMotion fails
  • Failure occurs on hosts with NFS and VMFS datastores.
  • In the /vmfs/volumes/Datastore/VMfolder/vmware.log, file shows the error similar to:

    Currently connected device" 'CD/DVD drive 1' uses backing '[Datastore] ISO_images/Windows 7 - 64 bit - with SP1.ISO', which is not accessible"

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0

Resolution

This issue is resolved in VMware vCenter Server 6.0 Update 3.

To work around this issue:
  1. Detach ISO mapping 
    • Navigate to the VM object in either the vCenter or Host UI
    • Right click on the VM > edit settings
    • Look for CD/DVD drive row
    • Uncheck the "connected" box to disconnect
    • Click OK to save.
  2. Power off the virtual machine
