The VMware Tools installer fails to install Network Introspection driver

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Complete Installation option is chosen while installing VMware Tools,
• The installer fails to install vnetFlt driver.
• The installation fails with the error:

Setup failed to install the Network Introspection TDI driver automatically. This driver will have to be installed manually

• Network Introspection driver is not installed in the virtual machine.
• All functions provided by that driver will not be available.
• You see error messages in VMINST and VMMSI log files of the tools installer.

Resolution

This is a known issue in:

• VMware Tools 10.2.x with Windows Vista and Server 2008 version.
• VMware Tools 10.3.0 with Windows Vista SP2 and Server 2008 SP2 Version.

Workaround:

• Instead of performing the full installation, do the default typical installation.

 

• Connect the virtual machine to the public network.
• Ensure that the Microsoft updates are installed and root certificates are updated.
