Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to force the Replica node to take over the Primary role in a VMware Aria Operations (formerly vRealize Operations) Operations cluster.

Environment

VMware Aria Operations

Resolution

Please ensure snapshots of the nodes (Primary/Primary Replica/Data) before proceeding using the steps below:
  1. Log into the Admin UI as admin and click the Take Offline button to take the cluster offline.
  2. Ensure the Aria Operations cluster is Offline, then log into the VMware vSphere client as an administrator.
  3. Right-click the desired Aria Operations node and click Snapshots > Take Snapshot.
  4. In the Take snapshot window, input name as pre-graceful restart, description as pre-graceful restart and untick "Include virtual machine's memory".
  5. After the snapshot process is done bring the cluster back Online.
To force the Replica node to take over the Primary role:
  1. Log in to the Admin UI on the Primary node using the URL:
    https://IP_or_FQDN/admin

Note: Replace IP_or_FQDN with the IP address of FQDN of the Primary node.
  1. Select the current Primary node and click Take Node Offline/Online. Enter a reason in the Take Node Offline/Online dialogue box and then click OK.
  2. Wait 15 minutes for the change to take effect. The Cluster Role value for the Replica node changes to Primary.
Note: The previous Primary node may still be listed as having the Primary role. You may see two Primary nodes listed.
  1. With the original Primary node still selected, click Take Node Offline/Online again.
  2. Enter a reason in the Take Node Offline/Online dialogue box and click OK.
  3. Wait for a few minutes for the change to take effect.
