Process for suppressing Trap Flood Notifications without missing critical Trap Flood alerts

Environment

Smarts 10.X / 2.X

Resolution

One option would be to just comment out the trap definition and restart the server.

However, if you are concerned with missing out on critical TrapFlood alerts the best option would be to use an Expiration Timer to clear these traps from your Global Console. This way you would still be notified by the alerts and monitor other notifications once the Flood alerts have been cleared.

The expiration timer can be set within the trap.  You can increase the value or decrease it depending on how long you want it to be visible. Example:

BEGIN_TRAP <Enterprise OID> <Generic Trap Number> <Specific Trap Number>
ClassName: SNMPTrap
Category: SNMPTrap
InstanceName: $SYS$
EventName: $E$ $N$ $S$
Severity: 2
EventText: Varbinds: $V*$
Expiration: 84600
State: NOTIFY
InMaintenance: FALSE
ClearOnAcknowledge: TRUE
EventType: MOMENTARY
SysNameOrAddr: $A$
UnknownAgent: IGNORE
LogFile: NONE
