Issue/Introduction

• Can the Smarts IP Management Suite monitor IPv6 addresses through an IPv4-only network?
• No IPv6 event is generated when an interface using IPv6 is down.
• Receive an interface down notification in Smarts IPv6 but not an IPv6 address issue

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

The IP domain is running on a host system that is not configured to use the IPv6 protocol.

Resolution

• If the host system that Smarts IP is installed on is not connected to the IPv6 network, there can be no ICMPv6 or SNMPv6 packets sent to the devices to monitor them. 
• IPv6 addresses will be discovered if they exist, but they will not be pinged or polled for status.
• Only IPv4 will be used, so there will not be any events generated for the IPv6 addresses.
