Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Disks are not claimed automatically by vSAN when the disk claim mode is set to Automatic.
  • No disk group(s) are created with the disks.
  • The disks in use report 0 of X eligible (where X is the number of disks in the hosts participating in the cluster).

Environment

VMware vSAN 5.5.x
VMware vSAN 6.0.x
VMware vSAN 6.2.x
VMware vSAN 6.1.x

Cause

Some SAS based controllers allow multiple hosts' access. By default, vSAN does not automatically select and claim disks that are attached to a controller with the capability to share its storage with multiple hosts. This behavior is by design to prevent an accidental overwrite of data.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, claim the disks manually.

To claim the disks manually:
  1. Open the vSphere Web Client.
  2. Click the Manage tab and click Settings.
  3. Under vSAN, click Disk Management.
  4. Select the Select all eligible disks option.
  5. Select the disks to include in vSAN.
  6. Click OK.
