Remediating an ESX/ESXi host using VMware Update Manager fails with the error: Cannot download VIB files from patch source

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

 If this issue relates to a failed upgrade of ESXi7.0U2, please see KB 83107  
 

• Cannot remediate an ESX/ESXi host using VMware Update Manage.
• Remediating an ESX/ESXi host fails.
• You see the error:
  
  Cannot download VIB files from patch source. Check the Update Manager log for download details
• In the vmware-vum-server-log4cpp.log file, you see entries similar to:

Environment

VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware ESX 4.1.x
VMware ESX 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs if the patch download has a checksum error.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove the VMware Update Manager hostupdate and metadata directories, then retry the patch download.

These are the default directory locations:

 

Note: These may have been customized during installation.

In Windows 2003 and earlier releases, the Update Manager hostupdate and metadata directories are located at:

• C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\hostupdate
• C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\metadata

In Windows Server 2008, the hostupdate and metadata directories are located at:

• C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\hostupdate
• C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\metadata
