Notes:
  • For more information on required licensing when upgrading from VMware Fusion 10.x to 11.x, see VMware Fusion 11.x sales, licensing and compatibility FAQs
  • Upgrading VMware Fusion 10.x to 11.x does not affect the contents of the virtual machine. All virtual machines and the data contained in them are retained.
  • Shut down any virtual machine before performing the upgrade. If any virtual machines are in a suspended state, resume them from the suspended state and perform a shutdown operation from the guest operating system. Ensure that status is Powered Off.
  • Installing VMware Fusion 11.x automatically removes VMware Fusion 10.x from your Mac.

Process to Upgrade VMware Fusion 10.x to 11.x:

  1. Shut down any virtual machines that are running.
  2. Quit VMware Fusion.
  3. Download and install VMware Fusion 11.x. For more information, see Downloading and installing VMware Fusion (2014097).
Virtual machines that were earlier present in Fusion 10.x get automatically added to the Fusion 11.x Virtual Machine Library. If the virtual machines fail to appear, re-add them to the library.

To re-add virtual machines to the library:

  1. Start VMware Fusion.
  2. Click File > Open from the VMware Fusion menu bar.
  3. Navigate to the folder in which the virtual machine is stored. For more information, see Locating the virtual machine bundle in VMware Fusion (1007599).
  4. Select the virtual machine.
  5. Click Open.

Note: Repeat the preceding procedure for all virtual machines that are present on your Mac.
After completing the upgrade, VMware recommends you to upgrade the hardware compatibility version and VMware Tools so that you can use new product features.

To upgrade the hardware compatibility version:

  1. Shut down the virtual machine.
  2. Click Virtual machine > Settings from the Fusion menu bar.
  3. Click Compatibility.
  4. Click Upgrade.

To upgrade VMware Tools:

  1. Power on the virtual machine.
  2. Click Virtual machine > Update VMware Tools from the Fusion menu bar.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
  4. Restart the virtual machine when prompted.
