Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Upgrade terminated due to critical error. Follow the upgrade guide to recover the system.

/var/log/vmware/prelude/upgrade-report-latest shows this error:

Welcome to VMware (PRODUCT) (VERSION)

You are required to change your password immediately (password expired).

WARNING: Your password has expired.

Password change required but no TTY available.

Cause

Passwords are set to expire after 1 year, through the upgrade. The last-changed date of the password is not updated.

Resolution

VMware recommends the use of passwords which expire after 365 days or less.

Please set an appropriate expiry and change password at least once per year.

Workaround:

The last-changed date of the password can be updated:

chage -d now root
