Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Configuring a replication from On-Premises to Cloud fails during the Destination VDC and Storage policy step with the error:
[ object object ]
  • Using your browser's developer tools to inspect network activity, you see the policy mappings API call fail with a long request URL containing a list of all organizations in the destination site and a 400 status code at the Destination VDC and Storage policy step of configuring a replication.
  • This issue occurs if you are logged into Cloud Director Availability Provider Portal with vCloud Director System Administrator credentials.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director Availability 4.x

Cause

This issue occurs because the HTTP request to retrieve replication policy mapping information for each Organization sent from Cloud Director Availability to vCloud Director has a header larger than 8KB.

The default supported HTTP header is 8KB for Apache. When the header exceeds this value the query times out, Cloud Director Availability is unable to fetch the resources from vCloud Director and no response is returned.

When logged in as a vCloud Director System Administrator in Cloud Director Availability, the HTTP header size is determined by the total number of Organizations in the connected vCloud Director instance. The maximum number of Organizations VMware Cloud Director Availability can handle vary depending on the length of the vCloud Director URL and the length of the Organizations' names.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware Cloud Director Availability 4.x.
Currently, there is no resolution.

Workaround:
To work around this issue, log into Cloud Director Availability using Organization Administrator credentials when creating new replications.

When logged in as an Organization Administrator, you only have visibility of a single Organization, so the replication policy check is limited to the current Organization.

If the issue persists, a similar error can also occur when you have a large number of Organizations VDCs in the vCloud Director instance. For more information, see "Unexpected Vcloud director error {{0}}" error when creating replications in VMware Cloud Director Availability 4.x.
