Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • The RDS on VMware on-boarding attempt fails to complete successfully.
  • The VMkernel adapter for the Cluster Control Network on one or more of the ESXi hosts do not have an IP address provided by DHCP (i.e., an IP from the 54.239.236.0/22 network). Instead, there will be a blank address (0.0.0.0) or an address from the Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) network (169.254.0.0/16).

  • Deployed appliances fail to retrieve an IP address on the Cluster Control Network via DHCP.

Environment

VMware Database Management Essentials 1.x

Cause

During the on-boarding procedure, an appliance is deployed that provides IP adresses via DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) on the Cluster Control Network in the following network: 54.239.236.0/22. If DHCP broadcasts are not transmitted appropriately across the network infrastructure for the Cluster Control Network, the VMkernel and the attached VM network interfaces cannot successfully retrieve an IP address and the on-boarding procedure cannot complete.

Resolution

Confirm that the network infrastructure is configured to handle the unique VLAN ID assigned to the Cluster Control Network and can accommodate DHCP broadcast messages between all hosts on the Cluster Control Network.
