Issue/Introduction

When attempting to diagnose issues with the onboarding process for RDS on VMware, confirmation of the RDS on VMware Installer version may be required to identify known issues or validate compliance with the support lifecycle. Additionally, this appliance is responsible for the initial delivery of the RDS Connector and RDS Edge Router appliances that establish the connection to AWS to complete the onboarding process. Thus, it may also be necessary to review the versions of these components.

Environment

VMware Database Management Essentials 1.x

Resolution

The versions for the components can be reviewed in the vApp properties on the deployed RDS on VMware Installer appliance, as detailed in the following table:

Version Properties
RDS on VMware Installer VersionguestInfo.RDSInstaller.version
RDS Connector VersionguestInfo.RDSConnector.version
RDS Edge Router VersionguestInfo.RDSEdgerouter.version

These properties can be accessed in the vSphere Web Client or, in later versions, the HTML5 vSphere Client using the following steps:
  1. Log into the vSphere Web Client (Flash) or the vSphere Client (HTML5) with an account that has sufficient privileges.
  2. Select Hosts and Clusters or VMs and Templates using the tabs or the navigation menu.
  3. Navigate to the RDS on VMware Installer Appliance virtual machine and select the item.
  4. In the detail pane, select Configure.
  5. In the resulting configuration panel, expand Settings and select vApp Options.
  6. Review the version properties.
    1. When using the original Flash based vSphere Web Client, perform the following steps.
      1. In the detail pane, select Edit.
      2. Expand the Authoring section.
      3. Highlight the preferred property and select the Edit button at the bottom of the table to display the value, as seen below:
    2. Alternatively, in the detail pane of later versions of the HTML5 vSphere Client, scroll to the Properties section and review the contents, which will be similar to the image below:

Additional Information

The ability to view the vApp properties is not available in all versions of the HTML5 vSphere Client. For more information about the 6.5 vSphere Client and the vSphere Web Client, please refer to the following article:
