Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
You see below issues in Windows 10 v1903 and later and in Windows Server 2022:
  • VM fails with triple fault and restarts during boot on ESXi host
  • In the vmware.log file, you see an error similar to msg.monitorEvent.tripleFault.
  • This issue is not consistent and virtual machines that consistently triple fault or triple fault after boot are impacted by another issue.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.x
VMware ESXi 6.7.x
VMware ESXi 6.5.x

Cause

Some Intel CPUs might fail to forward Debug Exception (#DB) traps and if a timer interrupt happens during the Windows system call, virtual machine might triple fault.
