Mechanism to verify disk contents after a Storage vMotion

Issue/Introduction

After a disk copy via a Storage vMotion or vMotion Without Shared Storage, this setting allows for validating the contents of the disk before and after disk copy.

Note: After adding the below mentioned config option in the vmx and powering on the VM, all live migrations (which includes disk copy) will result in disk compare. This detailed comparison is a slow process and sometimes takes 10X longer than the actual disk copy. For this duration of disk comparison, the VM will not be running guest OS and will be in a suspended state.

Resolution

To Enable this option, please follow the below steps:

1. Power off the virtual machine.
2. Right-click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
3. Click the VM Options tab.
4. Select the Advanced.
5. Click the Edit Configuration button.
6. From the Configuration Parameters window, click Add Configuration Params.
7. Add the below parameter and value:

svmotion.lateCompareDisks = "TRUE"

8. Power on the virtual machine.
