Issue/Introduction

To provide insight on the cause for LWD error to appear while attempting to take high-frequency snapshots on some of the VMs configured in VCDR protection groups.

Symptoms:

Attempting to take a high-frequency snapshot on a VM fails with the following error

"Enable LWD-based data protection - Cannot complete the operation. See the event log for details. Another vendor has already initiated an operation on the protected entity."

Screenshot of the error seen in the on-premise Task Console:

Cause

The error message being encountered on VM's that had previously been configured for high-frequency snapshots on a different VCDR environment. Even though the previous VCDR environment no longer exists and there were no lingering snapshots on these VM's, the VM's remain 'marked' from previously being LWD protection.

Resolution

  • Follow the steps to detach the high-frequency snapshots from the VM in order to 'unprotect' it.
  • The following documentation walks through the process of how to detach the old high-frequency snapshots from VMs:

  • Once 'unprotected' re-attempt a High-frequency snapshot to verify that the VM is no longer experiencing the issue.

Note: The first high-frequency snapshot taken of that VM requires a full seeding process so it may take longer to complete.
