Issue/Introduction

To upload the .vmdk file.

Symptoms:
  • Uploading .vmdk file even after logging in as a Cloudadmin may fail.

Cause

You can upload only stream-optimized vmdk files to a vSAN datastore.

Resolution

If you are planning to download a .VMDK file from VMFS/NFS datastores in On-premise, follow one of the below process to upload it to vSAN datastore in SDDC.

1. VMware stream-optimized file format is a compressed format disk for streaming. If you want to upload a vmdk file that is not in stream-optimized format, then, convert it to stream-optimized format using the vmware-vdiskmanager command‐line utility. For more information, see Virtual Disk Manager User’s Guide

2. You can use VMware vCenter Converter and migrate the source VM to target SDDC vCenter. Refer KB93191 for more information.

3. Export the VM in ovf/ova at source and upload the ovf/ova to the vSAN datastore in the VMC on AWS SDDC.

4. Export the VM in ovf/ova format at source and leverage Content library to import the files into SDDC. Refer VMware Cloud on AWS documentation for more details.
