Issue/Introduction

Definitions

  • VgpuMMAutomationTimeoutSecs

  • With vCenter Server 7.0 Update 3f and vSphere 7.0.3 or newer versions, a DRS Cluster Advanced Options override was added to provide Virtual Infrastructure Admins a way to OPT-IN to automated evacuation of vGPU Virtual Machines:

Option: VgpuMMAutomationTimeoutSecs
Value: -1

  • Manual Evacuation: vGPU Virtual Machine can be manually live migrated when asking host to enter maintenance mode.

  • Automatic Evacuation: vGPU Virtual Machine can be auto live migrated when asking host to enter maintenance and "VgpuMMAutomationTimeoutSecs" is set to -1.

  • DRS recommendation: DRS recommends a host that a vGPU Virtual Machine can migrate to.

When vCenter is 8.0U1a and higher version, ESXi Host in DRS cluster, with powered on vGPU Virtual Machines can be remediated using VUM/vLCM.

When DRS Cluster Advanced Option VgpuMMAutomationTimeoutSecs is set to -1, DRS recommends compatible hosts in the Cluster, and vGPU Virtual Machines are automatically migrated when host enters Maintenance Mode.

If VgpuMMAutomationTimeoutSecs is not set to -1, then DRS does not  recommend compatible hosts in the Cluster, and only option user has is to manually evacuate Virtual Machines.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0.1
VMware vCenter Server 7.0.3
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0
VMware vCenter Server 8.0.x

Resolution

The page lists  vCenter and ESXi versions support matrix compatibility with reference to vGPU Virtual Machine automated migration for Host Maintenance Mode in a DRS Cluster.

Support Matrix

  • vGPU Virtual Machines evacuation to be done manually for vCenter release < 7.0U3f for upgrades

  • vGPU Virtual Machines evacuation could be done automatically for vCenter release > 7.0U3f on setting the attribute (VgpuMMAutomationTimeoutSecs)

  • vGPU Virtual Machines evacuation to be done automatically for vCenter 8.x release and recommendations to be passed to vLCM (vLCM Integration)
