Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  •  NFS mount commands will fail if they contain a single quote.

  • Upgrade from 6.x to 7.x builds after 7.0U2 will result in a PSOD if volume names in 6.x had a single quote.

  • Upgrade from a 7.x build before 7.0U2 to a 7.x build after 7.0U2 will result in the affected volume not being mounted. The corresponding upgrade failure message would be present in /var/log/configstore-upgrade.log.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.3
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.2

Cause

The issue occurs as ConfigStore is not handling special characters correctly in the names. A single quote in the name is misunderstood as the closing quotation.

Resolution

The issue has been resolved in 8.0U1

Workaround:

To workaround the issue, please follow the below mentioned process:

  • Use volume names without single quotes.
  • For upgrades, rename all existing volume names containing a single quote to names without a single quote before starting the upgrade.
