Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

After running NVMUpdate on icen driver following error will be presented:
“Tool execution completed with the following status: An error occurred when updating a firmware module.”
In most cases this is only cosmetic issue as NVMUpdate finished properly even regardless of failure. However if any issues occur during NVMUpdate this problem might hide them.
After update reboot the platform and verify NVM version.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.2
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7

Cause

Starting NVMUpdate process will eventually trigger hardware reset to apply new NVM. During reset driver blocks all read/write operations for external tools.
NVMUpdate requires to perform read operations to check proper NVM status and as driver is reset this will not be possible and cause error.

Resolution

To reolve the issue, update icen driver before NVMUpdate. The following versions are affected:
ESXi 6.7: 1.10.2.0 -> fixed in 1.10.4.0
ESXi 7.0: 1.10.2.0 -> fixed in 1.10.4.0
ESXi 7.0u2: 1.10.3.0 -> fixed in 1.10.5.0
