Resolution

The issue will be fixed in future ESXi release.

Workaround:

To resolve “guestId” reported an empty string issue, please follow these steps:

  1. Login to the guest OS.

  2. Go to the folder “C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools\”, if “tools.conf” file not exist, copy one from this file “C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools\tools.conf.example

  3. Open “tools.conf” file, add below configure item under “guestosinfo” part:

[guestosinfo]

short-name=windows9-64

  1. Save the change to “tools.conf” file, then restart “VMware Tools” service.

  2. Go to check “guestId” in Guest Info, it’s set to “windows9_64Guest”.
