Issue/Introduction

The NTP service fails to start after a new install of Aria Operations for Networks Platform or Collector. During bootup will see messages "NTP is NOT-IN-SYNC".

Attempts to manually start NTP service will fail with "Failed to start ntp.service: Unit ntp.service not found".

Running "ntp show" will show configured NTP server with a keyword "nts".

Environment

Aria Operations for Networks 6.13.0
Aria Operations for Networks 6.14.0
Aria Operations for Networks 6.14.1

Cause

The "Secure NTP Server" option was chosen during the deployment phase, but the designated NTP server doesn't support a security feature.

Resolution

If secure NTP was selected during setup then "ntp show" and /etc/ntp.conf will have a line with keyword “nts”.

During deployment, if secure NTP is not supported then when asked to "Configure NTP or secure NTP", type "n".

To resolve issue:

1. Ssh to Networks Collector appliance as a user "support".

2. Change user to Ubuntu user by typing "ub".

(cli) ub

3. Edit /etc/ntp.conf, at the end of the file remove keyword “nts”, and save file.

ubuntu@vrni:~$ vi /etc/ntp.conf

ubuntu@vrni:~$ cat /etc/ntp.conf

4. Login to Networks Collector appliance as a user "consoleuser" and sync NTP server.

(cli) ntp sync

(cli) ntp show
