Issue/Introduction

• Upgrade process halts at stage 9 of 14.
• Error message: "Failedresource key=pak_manager.action_failed, resource args=[run admin firstboot scripts]"
• Following error messages are seen in pakManager/vRealizeOperationsManagerEnterprise-814122798982/apply_system_update_stderr.log:

• In /var/log/firstboot/vsutilitiesFirstBoot.py_8407_stdout.log  file, you will also see log entries similar to:

Environment

VMware Aria Operations 8.x

Cause

• Customization of the /etc/motd file (Message of the Day) has added text that interferes with JSON parsing during the upgrade process.
• The specific text in motd file causing the issue is: "WARNING: Use of this System is restricted to authorized users only….."

 

Resolution

• Temporarily rename the /etc/motd file to avoid interference:
  • Use the command: mv /etc/motd /etc/motd.orig
• Reattempt the upgrade process.
• If successful, restore the /etc/motd file:
  • Use the command: mv /etc/motd.orig /etc/motd
