Instruction to run iperf on ESXi

Issue/Introduction

This article is to describe how to run iperf on ESXi.

 

In some cases, we need to check network throughput between ESXi management port. For example, slow clone case.

Thus, we need a way to run iperf from ESXi.

Environment

ESXi 7.x

ESXi 8.x

Cause

Resolution

Server:

• esxcli network firewall set -e false
• cp /usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperf3 /usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperf3_copy
• /usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperf3_copy -s

Client:

• esxcli network firewall set -e false
• cp /usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperf3 /usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperf3_copy
• /usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperf3_copy -c <esxi server> -p 5201 -t 3 -w 1536
