Issue/Introduction

Updated March, 2024

  • This document lists the official supported SFP modules for VMware SD-WAN Edge devices.
  • This list includes all the SFP modules tested and validated on the respective Edge models by VMware SD-WAN Engineering using the latest Edge software build.
  • Important Notes regarding this list and SFP module usage on VMware SD-WAN Edges is located after the lists.
  • The SFP lists are sorted by Interface Type (Copper, SX, LX, SR, LX, etc.) to clarify what the choices are between the several vendors offering a supported SFP for a particular interface type on a given Edge model.
  • A PDF of the list of supported SFPs is available with full text and live hyperlinks.  Please look at the bottom the KB for Attachments and click on the  "VMware SD-WAN Supported SFP List March 2024" file to download it.

What is new in the March, 2024 Update
The newly introduced SD-WAN Edge Model 710-W is added to the KB article and includes validated support for three SFP modules. Full information available in the the Edge 710-W section.

What is new in the December, 2023 Update
There is no change in the SFP models that are supported.
There is an amendment to the Edge Models 620/640/680 table for three SFP models: Dell
407-BBVJ; Fiberstore E10GSFPLR; and Dell 407-BBZV. Each of them is listed as 10G-only in the Considerations section.

In other words, there will be no fix for these SFP models being 10G only as this is a limitation for the Edge 6x0 hardware with regards to these SFPs and cannot be corrected by a change to the Edge software.

What is new in the October 18th, 2022 Update
The two SFP modules there were added on September 7th, the VarData VMWARE-10G-SR-D and the VarData VMWARE-10G-LR-D were added with the intention that these modules would be supported on all SFP ports of the Edge 3x00 model line. However, due to additional feedback from Intel, these SFP modules are not supported on SFP1 and SFP2, where the Intel Ethernet Network Adapter X722 is used. This is due to Intel not supporting dual-rate 10Gbe SFP+ transceivers, and both VarData SFPs are dual rate.

As a result the Considerations sections for both modules are revised to indicate that both SFPs are supported only on SFP3 and SFP4 for the Edge 3400 and 3800 models, and on SFP3-SFP8 on the Edge 3810.

What is new in the September 7th, 2022 Update:
Two SFP modules are added as supported to the Edge 3400/3800/3810 list:

  • The VarData VMWARE-10G-SR-D SFP is the Non-TAA compliant version of the VMware-10G-SR-D-TAA. The key difference between the TAA compliant version and this newer VMWARE-10G-SR-D model is that it can be used on any 3x00 SFP port without qualification.
  • The VarData VMWARE-10G-LR-D SFP is the Non-TAA compliant version of the VMware-10G-LR-D-TAA. As with the VMWARE-10G-SR-D, the VMWARE-10G-LR-D SFP can be used on any 3x00 SFP port without qualification.
What is new in the August 18th, 2022 update:
  • The Fiberstore E10GSFPSRX is removed entirely from this KB as a unsupported SFP. This is due to compatibility issues with the 3x00 model line and an incorrect Dell reference number. Several VarData and Dell SR interface type modules remain available as alternatives.
  • The Fiberstore SFP SFP-10GLR-31 IN is removed form the 3x00 list as it is not supported and is replaced with the supported model: SFP-10GLR-31 DE.
  • For the Dell 407-BBZV module, two additional comments are added in the Considerations column:
    • The 407-BBZV must be based on the Finisar FTLX1471D3BCV-IT as this was the OEM qualified by VMware. OEM information is located on the top of the module.
    • Prior to purchasing the 407-BBZV module, first confirm with the vendor that it is based on the Finisar FTLX1471D3BCV-IT.

These remarks are to emphasize that the Dell 407-BBZV has multiple OEM's but the only OEM for this module that has been tested and verified by VMware is the Finisar version which will show as FTLX1471D3BCV-IT on the top of the module.

What is new in the July, 2022 update:
  • In the Important Notes section, two notes are removed and replaced with a revised note that merges the two. The two notes which were removed read:
For customers using Edge models 520 and 540 who have installed an SFP module based on a recommendation from an older SFP model list will continue to be supported as the VMware Engineering team can modify the NIC firmware on these models.

For customers using Edge models 840, and 2000 who have installed an SFP module based on a recommendation from an older SFP model list, VMware Engineering may be unable to resolve legacy SFP issues on these models as the OEM for these hardware Edges will not modify the NIC firmware for VMware Engineering team as they are End of Sale from the OEM.

These two notes are now merged into a single Important Note which indicates that all four Edge models (520, 540, 840, and 2000) cannot have their NIC firmware modified to correct an issue arising from an older non-qualified SFP model. The new note reads:

For customers deploying an Edge model 520, 540, 840, or 2000 and using an SFP module based on a recommendation from an older SFP model list, VMware Engineering is no longer able to resolve legacy SFP issues on these models. Engineering cannot modify the NIC firmware for these Edge models and the OEM for these hardware Edges will not modify the NIC firmware for the VMware Engineering team as they are all End of Sale from the OEM. As is already the case with newer Edge models (6x0, 3x00), should a customer encounter an issue using an older SFP on one of the above Edge models (an SFP that is not on the supported list for that Edge model), the recommendation is to switch to a qualified SFP model which is listed as supported in the matching Edge model SFP list.
  • No other changes were made, and the supported SFP lists remain unchanged from the June update and the downloadable pdf for June continues to reflect the most up-to-date status of supported SFP models.
What is new in the June, 2022 update:
  • Corrected an editorial error on the Edge 620/640/680 table for the VarData VMware-10G-SR, which included the Dell 407-BCSR as one of two replacement equivalents for the VarData module. The Dell 407-BCSR is not supported on the Edge 6x0 platform. The VMware-10-SR/407-BCSR equivalency remains true when deploying on an Edge 3x00 platform where the 407-BCSR is supported.
What is new in the March, 2022 update:
  • Corrected an editorial error that transposed the Considerations for the VarData SFP models VMware-10G-LR-D-TAA and VMware-10G-LR in the Edge 3x00 section. Specifically, the details regarding their Dell SFP equivalency and which ports on a 3x00 they are supported.
  • No other changes were made.

Important Notes

  • With regards to 100 Mbps mode:
    • The Edge models 520/540 have two SFP models which are tested to support 10/100/1000 Mbps modes.  Please consult that models' list for specifics.
    • The Edge 610 SFP ports do not support 100 Mbps mode, but a user may use any of the on-board ports (GE1-GE6) for 100 Mbps.
    • The Edge models 620/640/680 SFP ports do not support 100 Mbps mode, but a user may use on-board ports GE1-GE4 for 100 Mbps.
  • There is a known issue across all VMware SD-WAN Edge platforms where in some instances, after swapping/inserting an SFP module, a regular reboot might not be sufficient to bring up the SFP and the Edge will need to be power cycled. This issue is tracked by VMware as #14655 and is included as an Edge Open Issue in all VMware SD-WAN Release Notes.
  • The above list represents what VMware SD-WAN supports and has tested as working going forward.  This is especially true on our latest hardware platforms (e.g. the 6x0 and 3x00 series).
  • SFP modules for Edge models 500 and 1000 are not included as both models are end-of-life and Engineering is no longer using these models for testing.
  • The list of supported SFP modules does not exclude unqualified SFP modules from other vendors being usable on a particular Edge model. It simply means VMware SD-WAN cannot assure our customers that unqualified SFP models will work as expected.
  • If you face a problem where a VMware SD-WAN Edge device uses an unqualified SFP, VMware SD-WAN Support can help you diagnose the source of the problem. Our Technical Support Engineer may recommend that you check the unqualified SFP and potentially replace it with an equivalent SFP that is qualified for the Edge (from an Edge model appropriate list seen earlier).
  • For customers deploying an Edge model 520, 540, 840, or 2000 and using an SFP module based on a recommendation from an older SFP model list, VMware Engineering is no longer able to resolve legacy SFP issues on these models.
