Internet Direct link path selection with the VMware SD-WAN service.

Issue/Introduction

• When using the Internet Direct (Internet Local Breakout) feature on a VMware SD-WAN Edge in an environment with multiple direct link options, the Edge will choose the best internet link as often as possible.

• This allows the Edge to have an Active/Active WAN link connection to the cloud while considering each WAN link's QoE. The Edge is then able to provide flow-based load balancing.

Resolution

The way the Edge determines if a link is eligible for an Internet Direct path is as follows:

1. Skip this link if the interface is down.

2. Skip this link if it is Private. 

3. Skip this link if it is unstable.

4. Skip this link if it is a hot standby. Note: Configuring a WAN link as a hot standby is supported in Release 4.0.0 and later.

5. Skip this link if the QoE is yellow or red. Note: This refers to the QoE link quality graph found on Monitor > Edge > QoE tab.

6. Skip this link if the Business Policy indicates a different Transport Group.  Note: for example, if a business policy specifies that Internet Direct traffic only use the public wired link group and the WAN link being checked is a public wireless link, then that link would be skipped. 

If the listed criteria are all satisfied and the link is marked as eligible, the Edge will pick the link with most available downstream bandwidth and use it to send data.
