Issue/Introduction

This document aims to troubleshoot the error encountered during What-If-Analysis capacity planning and identify potential solutions.

  • Encountering an error while running a What-If-Analysis capacity planning scenario.
  • The error message states: "Specified VMs and/or Clusters are either in not collecting state or no longer exist."
  • The adapter instance responsible for data collection might be in a "WARNING" state.
  • Cluster data collection might be down.

Environment

VMware Aria Operations 8.14.x
VMware vRealize Operations 8.10.x
VMware Aria Operations 8.12.x
VMware Aria Operations 8.16.x

Cause

Several factors could contribute to this Error:

  • Outdated information: The scenario might be utilizing outdated information about VMs or clusters, leading to inconsistencies.
  • Adapter issues: The adapter responsible for collecting data from the specified VMs/clusters could be malfunctioning.
  • Cluster Compute Resource (Object Type) data collection: The cluster itself might not be collecting data correctly.

Resolution

Check Adapter Instance Status:

  • Verify if the relevant adapter is up and running in the Aria Operations UI
( For Aria Operations 8.17.X and below versions - Data Sources -> Integrations
For Aria Operations 8.18.X and below versions - Administration -> Integrations )
  • Edit the specific adapter experiencing the issue and perform a "Validate Connection" for the corresponding vCenter.
  • If prompted, import the associated certificate and save the configuration.
  • Stop and restart collection on the adapter.

Verify Cluster Compute Resource Collection Status:

  • Confirm if the cluster is actively collecting data :
( For Aria Operations 8.17.X and below versions - Environment -> Inventory -> Adapter Types -> vCenter -> Filter for the cluster -> Stop/Start collection
For Aria Operations 8.18.X and below versions - Operations -> Configurations -> Inventory Management -> Adapter Types -> vCenter -> Filter for the cluster -> Stop/Start collection )

Update Scenario Criteria and Rerun:

  • Revise the What-If-Analysis scenario criteria with the most recent information and rerun the analysis.

Reboot Aria Operations Node (Optional):

  • As a last resort, consider rebooting the Aria Operations node to potentially resolve any lingering software issues.

Additional Information

Impact/Risks:
  • Unable to successfully run What-If-Analysis scenarios for capacity planning due to inaccurate or unavailable data.
  • This hinders the ability to effectively assess and forecast infrastructure needs.
