Issue/Introduction

Ubuntu version:22.04.2 will fail to install in VM when running on ESXi 6.7.x and ESXi 7.0.x.


Symptoms:

Virtual Machine Guest OS will observe a kernel panic after power on VM and then choose "Try or Install Ubuntu"

[ ] Initramfs unpacking failed: write error
[ ] Failed to execute /init (error -2)
[ ] Kernel panic - not syncing: No working init found.


Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7

Cause

This issue is caused due to insufficient memory resource allocation.

Resolution

Currently there is no resolution.


Workaround:

Follow the below mentioned steps:

  1. Shutdown the VM.

  2. Edit VM settings to increase memory resource to 2GB or more.

  3. Power on the VM and start the installation again.
