Issue/Introduction

  • This article explains the steps to manually Cancel the RDU workflow if the switchover phase has given the control of the upgrade over to the new version vCenter VM.
  • Manual cancellation might be required if unable to restore the Source vCenter Server Appliance to an operational state on failed RDU Upgrade or Post Successful upgrade.
  • There is a change in the behaviour on the Source vCenter Server when RDU shutdowns the old version vCenter to disable all services and networking. This is done to ensure accidental PowerON/Restarts do not affect the environment. Manual clean-up helps to revert these changes.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.0 U3

Resolution

Follow the below steps:

  1. Power off the new version vCenter VM.

  2. Log into the ESXi host that has the old version vCenter VM.

  3. Ensure the old vCenter VM is powered on.

  4. Log in to the old version vCenter VM through the console with root credentials.

  5. Execute the script /usr/lib/vmware-vlcm/public/upgrade_cancellation.sh

  6. Wait for the cancellation to complete. The progress can be checked in the log file /var/log/vmware/vlcm/vlcm.log.

    /var/log/vmware/vlcm/vlcm.log
