VMware Tools displays the message: Out of date

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• VMware Tools shows Out of date in vSphere Client connected to vCenter Server.
• This issue can occur even when the version of VMware Tools matches the version of the ESX host.
• This issue can occur when using a PXE boot to upgrade the Guest Images and VMware Tools. If you do a soft reboot, VMware Tools does not register as updated.
• The virtual machine's vmware.log log files contains this entry, indicating that the state is set to 'oldTools' :

VMXVmdb_SetToolsVersionState: status value set to 'oldTools'

Environment

VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Embedded
VMware ESX 4.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Embedded
VMware ESX 4.1.x

Cause

The issue occurs because a soft reboot is not detected by VMware Tools.

Note: When the reboot is detected by VMware Tools the vmware.log reports:

TOOLS soft reset detected

Resolution

The issue is resolved in VMware ESX/ESXi 4.1 Update 2 and VMware ESXi 5.0. You can download these versions from the Download Center.

To workaround this issue, completely shut down and restart (powercycle) the virtual machine after updating VMware Tools.

Additional Information

The status of VMware Tools also gets updated when the Install/Upgrade script ends after a hard reboot, soft reboot, or after a virtual machine migration to a new ESX host.
