Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
In the /var/log/storageRM.log file, you see the log spew:

storageRM: DatastoreName retry : 1, Permission denied Error -1 opening file /vmfs/volumes//DatastoreName/.iorm.sf/slotsfile
storageRM: open /vmfs/volumes//DatastoreName/.iorm.sf/slotsfile(0x10000042, 0x0) failed: Permission denied


Environment

VMware ESXi 4.0.x Embedded
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Embedded
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Cause

The issue occurs if wrong mode is set on slotfile for NFS volumes.

Resolution

These log messages do not affect the functionality and can be safely ignored.

To workaround this issue, change the mode of the slot file:
  1. Connect to SSH
  2. Change directory to:

    cd /vmfs/volumes/<NFS_DATASTORE_AFFECTED>/.iorm.sf

  3. Run this command to check the mode of slotfile

    ls -altr

    For Example:

    ----r-x--- 1 nfsnobod root 256 Feb 10 20:00 slotsfile


  4. Run this command to change the mode of slotfile:

    chmod 755 slotfile
