The Summary tab of the Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine reports the status of VMware Tools as Not Running (Current)

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

After a vMotion/Snapshot operation, you experience these symptoms in the Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine:

• The Summary tab of the virtual machine reports the status of VMware Tools as:
  
  Not Running (Current)
  
  
• VMware Tools status in the System Tray and the Services window of the virtual machine appear as Running
• Manually restarting the VMware Tools service from services.msc reports the message:
  
  The service could not be stopped, but a subsequent attempt to start the service would start up fine.
  
  
• Restarting the service shows the status of VMware Tools as running, but a subsequent vMotion/Snapshot operation stops VMware Tools
• Uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Tools does not resolve the issue.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Embedded
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Cause

This issue occurs if the VMware Tools installation files, located at C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools and C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools, are corrupted.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must reinstall VMware Tools after deleting the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools and C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools folders:

1. Uninstall VMware Tools from the virtual machine.
2. Reboot the virtual machine.
3. Take a backup of the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools and C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools folders by renaming the folders.
4. Reboot the virtual machine.
5. Install VMware Tools.
