Unable to protect a virtual machine (VM) as it results in the warning: "Device not found: Hard disk #"
Another type of warning that can be seen for the protection status of the VM is: "Device not found: CD/DVD drive #"
It could also be possible that previously the VM was protected, but on removing the VM from the protection group and then on adding it back, this warning is seen.
VMware Site Recovery Manager 8.x
VMware Live Site Recovery 9.x
Storage Array based Replication is used.
The warning "Device not found: Hard disk #" indicates that VMware Live Site Recovery cannot protect all of the virtual machine's disks because the datastore storing hard disk # is not included in the protection group.
The cause of warning "Device not found: CD/DVD drive #" is the same, the datastore where the CD/DVD device attached to the VM resides is not protected in this protection group.
To resolve this issue, there are two options:
Create consistency group for the datastore where the hard disk reporting the warning resides:
Note: The datastore cannot be directly added to the protection group from the VLSR's protection group. The consistency group at the storage end must be configured and detected by VLSR.
The datastore associated with the VM's hard disk, which is generating the warning, needs to be added to the storage-level consistency group which is part of the protection group.
Detach the hard disk from the VM's protection configuration, if it is intended to not have the datastore added to the protection group:
In Site Recovery navigate to Protection Groups > Select the protection group with issue > Select Virtual Machines tab
Select the VM with issue > Click on "Configure Protection" > Click on the hard disk with issue > Click Detach.
Click "OK" to save configuration.
