Issue/Introduction

  • Adding a virtual machine to the resource pool displays warning related to resource share.
  • Attempting to add a virtual machine to an existing resource pool, you see this warning:

The memory resource shares for [Virtual Machine name] are much higher than the virtual machines in the resource pool. With its current share settings, this virtual machine will be entitled to x% of the CPU/memory resources in the pool. Do you want to continue?

Note: The warnings may reference either CPU or memory.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server

Cause

Virtual machines created outside a resource pool have different relative shares of resources than virtual machines created inside the pool.

This issue occurs if the virtual machines created outside the pool are inconsistent with those shares of virtual machines which were created within the pool as share allocations are relative to the resource pool.

For more information, see the Creating Resource Pools section in the Resource Management Guide.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, adjust the shares of the virtual machine to ensure that its resource shares are in line with the resource pool prior to adding.

For example: If the virtual machine uses a large amount of CPU or memory when added to the pool, you may need to adjust the shares to Low for this virtual machine to ensure that it does not get a large proportion of the total shares available to the resource pool.

Additional Information

Impact/Risks:
Setting the shares incorrectly could cause performance issues on the virtual machine itself, or on other virtual machines in the resource pool.
