Issue/Introduction

This article provides a method to troubleshoot CPU usage and remote connections that may be causing high CPU activity for the vpxd.exe process on Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012 machines. In the Resource Monitor, you can narrow down your search on a specific process that is running, and filter by network activity and TCP connections.

Symptoms:
  • The vpxd.exe process consumes 100% of the CPU resources.
  • The vpxd.exe process consumes considerable amount of the physical memory.
  • You cannot log in to vCenter Server.
  • In the performance chart of the cluster view, you see the message:

    The data source timed out

  • You see the error:

The request failed because the remote server took too long to respond

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs if there are third-party component(s) that can cause high traffic activity to vCenter Server. From this, you can make the calculative decision if the connection is exhausting vCenter Server or is performing as expected.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use RDP to connect to vCenter Server and navigate to Windows Task Manager to check the CPU and Physical Memory usage.
To check the CPU and Physical Memory usage:
  1. Click the Performance tab.
  2. Click the Resource Monitor.
  3. In the Resource Monitor tab, select the process you want to review and navigate through the various tabs, such as Disk or Networking.

These screenshots provide a summary of the remote connections to vCenter Server process (vpxd.exe).
