LGTO sync error interrupts remote virtual machine connectivity in VMware ESX 3.x/4.x and VMware ESXi 4.x

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• You see an LGTO sync error messages appear on your system.
• You see the LGTO syn error message in the Windows Event viewer.
• Network connectivity to the virtual machine fails or is interrupted.
• Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) connection fails.
  

Environment

VMware ESX Server 3.0.x
VMware ESX 4.0.x
VMware ESX Server 3.5.x
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Embedded

Cause

This issue occurs due to the LGTO sync service that is part of the VMware tools.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must disable the LGTO Sync service.

Note: The LGTO Sync service is not applicable with Windows 64-bit.

To disable the LGTO Sync service:

1. Open the Windows Device Manager.
2. Click View > Show Hidden Devices.
3. Click to expand Non-Plug and Play Drivers.
4. Find the Sync Driver device. To verify that you have found the correct device, edit the Properties and click the Driver tab.
   
   The Driver tab shows information similar to:
   
   Service name: LGTO_Sync
   Display name: Sync Driver
   
   
5. After you have located the correct device, click Cancel to go return to the Device manager.
6. Right-click the device and click Disable.
7. Reboot the virtual machine.

Additional Information

The Sync driver is responsible for quiescing the drive before a snapshot occurs (which happens before the backup).

If your server does not run a database (SQL, Exchange, Oracle, AD), you can implement the LGTO SYNC driver in VMware tools to quiesce the file system. This means your snapshot will contain as much as it can, and no half-open file writes.

Caution: If your server does run a database, do not use the LGTO SYNC driver unless you plan on stopping the database services using the pre-freeze script and starting them again using post-thaw script. If you do not, database services may fail during the LGTO SYNC freeze operation.
