Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
After you perform a complete migration to a dvSwitch (including the management network VMkernels) and delete previous vSwitches and their portgroups:
  • Some of the portgroups which were in a deleted vSwitch are still visible under the cluster in the networking view.
  • Portgroups that are not part of any vSwitch or dvSwitch appear under a cluster in network view in vCenter Server.

Environment

VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware ESX 4.1.x
VMware ESX 4.0.x

Resolution

To resolve this issue:
  1. Check if any virtual machines are linked in the portgroup.
  2. If you find any linked virtual machines, check each one for snapshots and consolidate the snapshots to remove the link with the old portgroup.

    Notes:
    • After the link is removed, the virtual machine disappears and is not longer associated with the old portgroup.
    • The old portgroup disappears after removing the link to the last virtual machine.
